Schedule and New Members Event
We’ve now finished the summer tournament with games at various pubs around the area. Coming up we have some events, the AGM and the two towns match scheduled.
- 28th July – Normal club night, come along for some casual games
- 4th August – Normal club night, come along for some casual games
- 11th August – End games workshop
- 18th August – Beginners Bacchus Tournament
- 25th August – Bank holiday, normal club night but early finish
- 1st September – AGM, all welcome to either participate or sit at the back playing chess
- 8th September – Two Towns match – all players in the area represent either Poole or Bournemouth in the annual grudge match
We’ve had numerous enquiries from potential members and the past few weeks have been awkward where we’ve been travelling every week, so we’re putting on an informal new members Bacchus tournament (named after the league run for new and returning players). There’s no pressure to join Poole Chess Club and new players from other clubs are welcome. We’re keen to get a selection of new players enjoying some over the board chess and to see what we, and the local chess scene, is all about.
It’s a very casual affair with no entry fee, but designed for anyone who has joined, rejoined or hoping to join the chess community recently. If you think you’re not ready for competitive chess or a tournament then this is the tournament for you! The aim is to get everybody about 4 games lasting about half an hour each (10 minutes each, with 10 seconds added to your time every move – 10+10). Starting at 7:30 at Poole Centenary Club. Advance notice is helpful but not essential to give me a chance to get the numbers to work.
It is fairly flexible but the main guide is that you’re eligible if you don’t have a full ECF grade. That means you’ve not played several over the board league or tournament games in the last year. If you have, let us know and we’ll judge it on a case by case basis, just so we don’t get a M. Carlsen competing!
