Poole C 2.5 – 1.5 New Milton

Bill Murrey had this problem waking up each morning to Sonny and Cher, reliving the same day over and over until the right outcome was achieved.

In his case he had to not be a miserable ‘chap’; in our case it was trekking over to New Milton to replicate the 2.5 – 1.5 win from earlier in the season.

As the match was about to start, our key man who got the decisive win in the first encounter looked around the New Milton venue and realized it was a home game. So short of one player and the rest of the team in the correct town, your humble captain had to nervously step in against to make up the numbers.

All the games started fairly level. 8 pawns apiece in fact. They then continued fairly level. A good way through the night an entertaining attacking game came down to two rooks each, once cheap back rank mating tricks were nullified the first draw of the evening was agreed between Tarik and Barry.

At that point Mike was a pawn up in a tight game.

Tim followed the example and soon agreed a good draw against Tim…Joyce and Jones.

At that point Mike was two pawns up in a tight game.

Mike managed to convert the advantages into a win to leave Andy as the last board needing a draw, whilst Simon was on loan to Poole B as the last board needing a draw.

With everyone waiting nervously in the bar, eventually both Simon for Poole B and Andy for Poole C had secured draws to clinch both matches.

Thanks to New Milton for coming down and providing some very closely fought games. Well done to Poole C for getting the win and restoring a 2 point lead at the top of the table.
