Poole A record their first win of the season against Poole B

In a hard fought match our A team recorded a 3-1 victory against our club colleagues from our B team.

The B team were heavily out graded and fielded Alan Davies playing his first game and Michael Malamatenakis playing his 2nd.

In the match first to show signs of progress was Mike Duggan who won a central pawn and position on the E file and a controlling rook. Pieces were swapped and Mike went on to win an end game but not before missing a pawn deflection giving up the advantage but recovered to secure the win.

John (A) team playing Toby (B team) had an interesting game with pieces on squares that were best described as unusual so giving possibilities to both players. However there was no advantage to either player so hands were shaken and a draw was agreed.  1.5/0.5 A team.

On Bd 4 David playing Alan generated an advantage on the F file and won a pawn and position but needed to be careful as Alan had a strong diagonal. The game continued and David needed to be accurate which he was to win the game, so 2.5/0.5  to win the match for the A team.

On Bd 1 – Martin (A team) playing Chip (B team) were involved in a cagey game with pieces quite congested so accurate play was needed by both players which it was and Chip only playing for pride did his utmost to force a win. Q’s had been swapped as all other pieces except a rook and 5 pawns each so with the time control getting to point of no return a draw was agreed. Martin could have been a little fortunate in that there was a simple rook move which would have won a crucial pawn and position but its easy when you are watching and this was only seen after analysis.

So the final match score 3-1 A team but a very brave attempt by the B team who gave all and of course the match was played in the best spirits which extended to the drinking area!

Well done Poole.
