League Season Underway!

4 divisions, 22+ players, and plenty of moves to make…

The clocks are ticking, the pieces are moving and Poole are back in action! With teams competing across B&DCL Divisions 1-4 and over 22 players representing the club, there’s plenty of chess to keep us busy. Most sides have already got a couple of games under their belts and the battle for league points is well underway!

From Poole E’s match last night, this position looks fairly level, but White’s exposed king makes it tricky to play without falling into a fork and dropping material. White has just played a5. Black can seize the initiative with …b5!, forcing the bishop back and preparing …b4 to crack open the king’s makeshift fortress. White’s alternatives aren’t appealing either: c4 creates weaknesses, while taking allows a bishop check with no good response.
