Latest News/Handicap Draw/AGM’s/Summer League

Just to confirm the club will be open tomorrow 30/5 for our usual club night and following a good turnout last week when we had about 10-12 members there it would be nice to see you tomorrow if you can make it.

As usual all guests/non members welcome even for a social drink etc.

KNOCK OUT DRAW

Having safely engineered through the 1st round against Dorchester we are drawn away at Highcliffe in the 2nd round on the Monday 4th July. Chip will be in touch to form a team for this match. This time he has all members in the club to choose from.

AGM’s

It is that time of the year and after an absence of 2 years due to Covid both the BDCL and DCCA dates have been set.

BDCL (Bournemouth League) at the Southbourne club on the 21/6 at 7.30pm

DCCA (Dorset League) at the Wimborne Club at Merley on the 29/6 at 7.30pm.

All members are welcome to attend and we will be collecting 2 league title winners boards (one at each AGM) so it would be nice to some of our members at the meetings to see the presentation of these awards.

As a reminder our B team ably captained by David winning the BDCL  Division 2 trophy and the individual Boardman trophy for the best score in Division 2.  Our core team members were David/Richie/Dragi/Sergiu and also excellently supported by Tim/Simon/Adam when needed.

Our Dorset league team won the Divison 3 trophy which was a pleasant suprise as the team of our 3 young Juniors, namely  Zander/Leo and Harry were only formed to give them experience in the league. The team was well supported by Steve/Andy/Tony/Tim/ and Joe. Team captained by yours truly.

Our own AGM is due to be set and we are planning to do this in early July, date to be confirmed.

SUMMER LEAGUE

We have agreed to enter a team in a new summer league.

This is set out as a fun/social evening against Highcliffe/Ringwood and Southbourne hopefully to be played outdoors, weather permitting or moved indoors if its our usual summer!

Details below from Martin Simons.

I have set up proposed fixtures on LMS, see the following link https://ecflms.org.uk/lms/node/99084/efixtures. The fixtures are also given below.

As possibly the club that may struggle most to find players, I have given Ringwood 2 home matches out of 3. Poole have also been given 2 home matches as they have a new venue (although Eric advises they will try and look for an accommodating outdoor venue – weather permitting). They will also have furthest to travel (to Ringwood) in their one away match.

All matches are currently scheduled to be played on a Monday every fortnight which I hope is ok. The beauty of all this, subject to any postponements, is both matches for each round can be played on the same evening.

I have found and booked an outdoor pub venue on a Monday evening on the Southbourne clifftop for the one Southbourne home match v Ringwood – The Spyglass and Kettle BH6 3PW https://www.google.com/maps/place/Spyglass+%26+Kettle/@50.7219689,-1.8107747,15z/data=!4m5!3m4!1s0x0:0x8033dec4a4a5e44d!8m2!3d50.7218527!4d-1.8108186.

Matches will not rated. It’s up to the match captains to agree on a start time and the time control but suggest a start time of 7pm and 45 mins + 15 secs to avoid any daylight issues (and to help juniors play on a school night). On LMS I have also allowed for up to 10 player teams but if you can only raise 4 or 6 players then this can be accommodated as there is a double default 0 – 0 facility on LMS. The important thing is to be in discussion with the opposing team captain so teams are of approximate equal strength (and number!).

Please feel free to use players from other local clubs for your teams (i.e. New Milton, Bournemouth and Wimborne) as the purpose of the summer league is to maximise numbers and have fun chess over a drink in the warm sunshine … hopefully! 😎

It is assumed that we will want to keep August free (but please tell me otherwise) so there is still a gap before next season but if you wish to have more matches (i.e. a return leg) then please let me know. It really doesn’t matter if some teams play more matches than others – I can set up additional fixtures on LMS.

The alternative is that we could have an outdoor chess jamboree / festival in August with all teams turning up similar to what Dorchester organise in September.

I plan to report on the Summer Chess League in the Newsletter next Saturday, 4th June and hopefully on the Dorset Chess website a day or two earlier with Peter’s help.
