Bacchus League – Poole Bishops 2.5/1.5 Southbourne Seagulls
YOU CAN’T WIN ANYTHING WITH KIDS – A CRY FROM A FOOTBALL PUNDIT PRIOR TO MANCHESTER UNITED WINNING NUMEROUS TITLES AND GREAT SUCCESS IN THE 90’S – WE WILL SEE
In a very close match Poole just came out on top thanks to Joe and the real winners were all the kids that played and gave a good account of themselves.
Unfortunately Leo who was desperate to play but was waiting on the result of his PCR test having returned from Brazil on Wednesday had to miss out. However Joe stood in and did the team proud.
Another success on the night was Harry whom had struggled in previous league games had his 1st victory and a huge relief when he overran his his young opponent playing his first league game Oliver Welch – well done Harry.
Conversely Steve had a bad night at the office and well done Finn who played a really sound and convincing game – hard luck Steve, you will have better nights.
So with the match 1-1 and the remaining 2 boards were very close but Joe was edging ahead and had a pawn advantage but needed to be very careful to make it pay. In the meantime Florence playing Zander started with an aggressive opening which Zander managed to block and hold the position.
Zander understood the concept of taking a draw providing Joe could push through for a win, great maturity for a kid and had one eye on the adjoining board. Florence played really well and solidly, also understanding her position seemed happy with a draw as the position was almost zugwang, quite unusual, given so many pieces on the board. Eventually , Zander offered the draw after trying to open the H file to no real advantage as all squares were covered. Well done both, great stuff in a high level game. So 1.5/1.5 and just one game to finish.
It did not take long for Joe to find a weak pawn, played extremely accurate moves and finished his opponent off and so won the result for Poole.
It was great to see all the kids play in a great spirit both in victory and defeat and we move on, until the next one.
Thanks all for playing.
